- Railjet services on this route are run jointly by Austria's OBB and Germany's DB as a single shared product, not two national trains meeting at a border - the same physical train continues from Munich through Salzburg and Linz to Vienna.
- Westbahn, launched in 2011 as Austria's first open-access competitor to OBB on the Vienna-Salzburg corridor, extended its own service across the German border to Munich - one of very few cases of a private Austrian rail operator running trains into Germany, rather than the more usual DB-into-Austria direction.
- The Munich-Rosenheim-Salzburg section of this route is scheduled for a roughly six-month full renovation closure in the second half of 2027 as part of Deutsche Bahn's high-traffic-corridor renewal programme - worth checking for planned engineering works and rail-replacement buses if traveling in that window (exact dates not yet finalized as of this writing).
Munich station
Departs from Muenchen Hauptbahnhof, presently undergoing a major reconstruction that also involves building a second S-Bahn tunnel beneath the station; despite the construction it's a couple of stops by S-Bahn or about 10 minutes on foot from Marienplatz, with no airport-style security check before boarding.
Vienna station
OBB/DB Railjet trains arrive at Wien Hauptbahnhof, opened in stages between 2012 and 2015 to replace the old Suedbahnhof, directly on the U1 subway line a few stops from Stephansplatz in the historic core; Westbahn trains instead arrive at the older Wien Westbahnhof on the opposite side of the city, connected to U3 and U6.
Train vs. other options
Flying takes around 1h05 in the air, but with both cities' main airports well outside their centers, the roughly 4-hour, Hauptbahnhof-to-Hauptbahnhof Railjet is generally competitive door-to-door; driving the approximately 435km via the A8 and A1 motorways takes around 4h without traffic, similar to the train's overall time but without a dining car or the ability to work en route.
Booking tips
- OBB Sparschiene and DB Sparpreis fares for the joint Railjet service (from about 19 EUR) are released months ahead and rise as the departure date nears - book early for the cheapest price.
- Westbahn, the private open-access competitor, runs 5 trains a day between Munich and Vienna via Salzburg and often undercuts the OBB/DB Railjet fare, though its 4h16 journey time is a bit slower than Railjet's fastest run.
- Check which Vienna station is on your ticket: OBB/DB Railjet trains arrive at Wien Hauptbahnhof, while Westbahn terminates at Wien Westbahnhof on the opposite side of the city - the two are not within easy walking distance of each other.
Good to know: Westbahn's Munich-Vienna service arrives at Wien Westbahnhof, not Wien Hauptbahnhof where OBB/DB Railjet trains terminate - the two stations are on opposite sides of central Vienna and connected only by tram or U-Bahn with a change, so factor that into onward plans or hotel choice before booking on price alone.
