What makes Naples to Rome different

This is Italy's fastest high-speed line by design - built for 300km/h running (versus the 250km/h Rome-Florence Direttissima) with ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 signalling, still relatively new technology for Italy when the line opened.
During pre-commercial testing between 2004 and 2005, an ETR 500 test train hit 347km/h on this line - one of the highest speeds ever recorded on the Italian rail network.
The line's longest tunnel bores 6,725m through the Alban Hills south of Rome - part of the infrastructure that, opened in stages between December 2005 and December 2009, cut the Naples-Rome trip from over 4 hours to about 1h10m.

Departs from Napoli Centrale on Piazza Garibaldi - the current building opened in 1966, replacing an 1866 station that was demolished between 1954 and 1960 and rebuilt 250m back from its original site. The square below now also holds Dominique Perrault's 2013 Metro Line 1 station, its canopy formed from eight branching steel 'trees'.

Arrives at Roma Termini, where the largest surviving stretch of Rome's 4th-century BC Servian Wall was uncovered in 1876-78 during construction of the station's 19th-century predecessor and is still on display today - inside a McDonald's on the lower level.

Train vs. other options

There's no meaningful scheduled flight market on this 225km corridor - the distance is too short for airlines to bother with once airport transfers are counted, so the train's roughly 1h10m run wins outright. The A1 Autostrada del Sole covers similar ground in around 2h15m without traffic, and that's before adding tolls and Naples' famously hard-to-find street parking.

Booking tips

Some Frecciarossa/Italo services calling at Napoli Afragola, about 10km outside central Naples, reach Rome nearly 15 minutes faster than trains starting at Napoli Centrale - but Afragola has limited public transport into the city center.
Book 3-4 months ahead on the Trenitalia or Italo app for Super Economy/Low fares from around EUR 9 - these sell out first.
Compare Frecciarossa and Italo departure times rather than committing to one operator - both run frequent nonstop trains, so the choice usually comes down to price and timing.

Good to know: Some Frecciarossa and Italo trains on this route call at Napoli Afragola - Zaha Hadid's striking arched high-speed hub about 10km outside the city - rather than, or in addition to, Napoli Centrale; Afragola-origin trains reach Roma Termini in about 55 minutes versus 1h10m from Centrale, but Afragola itself has limited local transport connections.
