Check pricesWhat makes Stockholm to Copenhagen different
- Stockholm Centralstation, this route's starting point, opened on 18 July 1871 and was, at the time, the second-largest building in the city after the Royal Palace - the grand central hall seen today was actually a later addition, built in 1925-1928 to a design by architect Folke Zettervall.
- The Oresund Fixed Link this route crosses carries road traffic on the upper deck and both railway tracks on the lower deck of the same structure over a 7,845m span that includes a 490m cable-stayed main span with pylons 203.5m tall.
- SJ's own advance-fare pricing on this corridor swings enormously by how early you book: fares starting around SEK 195-295 in the roughly 90-day advance window can be four to six times higher - SEK 1,200-1,500 - for a fully flexible same-week ticket in second class.
Stockholm station
Departs from Stockholm Centralstation, whose 1871 main building was designed by Adolf W. Edelsvard in an Italian Renaissance style with facade statues representing agriculture, commerce, industry and strategy; luggage lockers are on the lower concourse level.
Copenhagen station
Arrives at Kobenhavn H, Denmark's largest railway station; the Reventlowsgade exit on the Vesterbro side is where roughly 2,000 bicycle parking spaces and several bike-rental counters cluster, reflecting how much of Copenhagen's onward travel from this station happens by bike.
Train vs. other options
SAS and Norwegian fly Stockholm Arlanda-Copenhagen Kastrup in around 1 hour 15-20 minutes, and with roughly hourly departures it's the fastest option for a same-day business trip; but Arlanda is a 20-minute Arlanda Express ride outside Stockholm while Kastrup is a 15-20 minute Metro ride from central Copenhagen, so once boarding, security and those transfers are added, the time saved over the train narrows to well under two hours out of a roughly five-hour rail journey.
Booking tips
- There's no separate-ticket blind spot here: SJ sells the Stockholm-Malmo-Copenhagen combination (X2000 plus the connecting Oresundstag) as one journey on sj.se, so you don't need to book the two legs on two different sites.
- Book SJ's discounted advance fares as early as the roughly 90-day booking window allows - weekday morning departures are consistently the cheapest, while Friday-afternoon and Sunday-evening trains sell out first and cost the most.
- Confirm whether SJ's direct X2000 has resumed before you book - it's due back on this route in autumn 2026; if it's still suspended when you travel, budget extra time at Malmo Central to walk between the surface-level SJ platforms and the underground City Tunnel platforms used by Oresundstag.
Good to know: Malmo Central isn't a single unified platform anymore: since the City Tunnel opened in 2010, transit trains including Oresundstag use four underground platforms reached through the 130m glass-roofed Glashallen concourse, while other services use the older surface-level hall.

Is there a direct train from Stockholm to Copenhagen right now?
Not as of mid-2026 - SJ's direct X2000 is suspended for fleet refurbishment and cross-border re-certification, so travelers change trains in Malmo. SJ has said the direct service should return in autumn 2026.
How long does the Stockholm to Copenhagen train take?
The direct X2000 normally takes about 4 hours 55 minutes to 5 hours 10 minutes. With the current Malmo change, budget closer to 5 hours 15 minutes to 5 hours 35 minutes.
Does the SJ ticket cover the whole Stockholm-Copenhagen trip during the current suspension?
Yes - SJ sells the Stockholm-Malmo-Copenhagen itinerary (X2000 plus connecting Oresundstag) as a single booking on sj.se, even though it involves changing trains and operators at Malmo Central.
