What makes Bordeaux to Paris different

  • The LGV Sud Europe Atlantique high-speed line opened on 2 July 2017, cutting the fastest Bordeaux-Paris journey from around 3 hours to about 2 hours - one of the largest single journey-time cuts made on any French TGV route that decade.
  • Bordeaux Saint-Jean's most recent rebuild ran from 2014 to 2017, timed to be ready for the new LGV's opening, and added a third hall - Hall 3 (Belcier) - on the Rue des Terres de Borde side, alongside the historic Hall 1 and Hall 2 building.
  • Gare Montparnasse, this route's Paris terminus, was originally named Gare de l'Ouest and sits across the 14th and 15th arrondissements - a different station entirely from the Gare de Lyon and Gare du Nord used by trains from southeast and northern France.

Bordeaux station

Departs from Bordeaux Saint-Jean, whose most recent rebuild ran from 2014 to 2017 to coincide with the new LGV's opening and added a third hall, Hall 3 (Belcier); the station has no metro link, but Bordeaux's tram network stops right outside, since the city has no underground system.

Paris station

Arrives at Paris Gare Montparnasse, which opened under the name Gare de l'Ouest and sits across the 14th and 15th arrondissements - a different Paris terminus from the Gare de Lyon and Gare du Nord used by trains from southeast and northern France, so allow time to orient yourself if you're connecting onward across the city.

Train vs. other options

By car, the roughly 500km A10 autoroute drive from Bordeaux to Paris typically takes around 5-5.5 hours without stops - more than double the TGV's fastest 2h04m city-centre-to-city-centre run, even before adding Parisian traffic or parking at the other end. Flying is faster in the air, but Bordeaux-Merignac airport sits well outside the city while Bordeaux Saint-Jean is a short tram ride from the historic centre, narrowing the door-to-door gap considerably.

Booking tips

  • Ouigo's cheapest fares (from EUR16) go on sale several months ahead - typically released in March for summer travel and October for winter - so book as soon as your dates open rather than waiting.
  • TGV inOui and Ouigo both run this corridor, but not every departure runs completely non-stop between Bordeaux and Paris - check the calling pattern (Angouleme, Poitiers, Saint-Pierre-des-Corps or Massy TGV) before booking if minimising travel time matters most.
  • Ouigo enforces strict cabin-bag-only luggage limits and charges extra beyond one main bag and one small item - worth checking before you book if you're bringing wine cases or other bulky items back from the region.

Good to know: Ouigo's cheapest Bordeaux-Paris fares are sold on Ouigo's own site and app rather than always matching what shows on SNCF Connect first - and unlike TGV inOui, Ouigo enforces strict cabin-bag-only luggage rules with extra charges beyond one main bag and one small item.

Arriving into Paris by train drops you at one of several grand 19th-century stations rather than a single hub - Gare de Lyon from the south and Switzerland, Gare du Nord from London and Amsterdam - each a short metro ride from the historic centre.
